The KU Hospital became an independent entity in 1998, separate from the University of Kansas educational institution. In 2017, the KU Hospital joined with the University of Kansas Physicians (UKP), to form what is currently known as the University of Kansas Health System. The Health System is comprised of a world-renown hospital, medical and cancer treatment clinics around the State of Kansas, and is directly engaged in and supports all facets of patient care. The Health System and UKP employ licensed, practicing health care providers and personnel in adjacent health professions. The University of Kansas Health System goes by many names including Health System, Health Authority, and the University of Kansas Hospital (aka abbreviated as UKHA and TUKHS).

Conversely, the University of Kansas (which includes the University of Kansas Medical Center) is a public research university, a top-tier teaching and research institution comprised of multiple student campuses. The University of Kansas administers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) campus in Kansas City includes the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions, as well as KUMC's significant research enterprise, but generally does not directly engage in clinical activities or patient care.
