Polsinelli Healthcare Law Fellowship

Healthcare Law Fellow Spotlight

Haley Essner

The Polsinelli Health Care Law Fellowship was established in collaboration between the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Health System to support and promote career advancement to those interested in leadership and legal issues facing health care in major research universities and academic medical centers, including but not limited to advancing health law policy, public health, privacy, HIPAA and other regulatory and compliance matters, transactional issues, new legislation and amendments to existing legislation impacting health care policy, medical liability and informed consent issues, health economics, bioethics and a wide range of issues relating to research, clinical practice and human trials. The fellowship program is open to third-year law students and recent law school graduates.

The KU Office of the General Counsel manages the legal affairs of all University of Kansas and University of Kansas Medical Center campuses as well as university-controlled affiliates. Its KUMC Office is located in Kansas City on the same campus as the University of Kansas Health System.

Sponsored by the nationally recognized firm Polsinelli LLC, the Polsinelli Healthcare Law Fellowship grants extraordinary and truly one-of-a-kind access into the legal life of the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Health System.  The opportunity provides an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with General Counsel attorneys on the university’s medical center campus, alongside the allied health professions and the only NCI-designated cancer center in the region, and to gain exposure to the University of Kansas Health System. Under the guidance and supervision of licensed attorneys, the law fellow will assume responsibility for a diverse range of legal matters and conduct important health care-related legal research. Supervising attorneys work closely alongside the law fellow pending admission to the Kansas Bar, and beyond, to guide the experience and provide valuable feedback and support. After successfully passing the Kansas Bar examination, the fellow will advise and provide legal guidance directly to administration, faculty, staff and students.
